چکیده

An analysis of uncertainties in retrievals of ice water content (IWC) from the Earth Observing System (EOS) Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the NASA Aura satellite is described. Errors in IWC retrievals due to variability in cloud shape and size, and in the relative position of cloud and sensor are investigated through analysis of data from simulations of MLS observations of high-altitude clouds. These errors are found to be of the same magnitude as estimated errors based on comparison of EOS MLS IWC with CloudSat IWC retrievals for observations at 147 hPa, while at 100 and 215 hPa the estimated errors are respectively smaller and larger than the CloudSat estimates. The errors due to assumptions regarding the particle size distribution are also considered and are found to be potentially much larger than those due to geometrical factors, especially for observations at higher tangent heights. Retrieval of the total ice mass within the instrument field-of-view is also considered and uncertainties in this quantity are found to be broadly comparable to uncertainties in IWC. Ice mass is an additional cloud parameter which may be retrieved from MLS measurements.

UARS/MLS Cloud Ice Measurements: Implications for H2O Transport near the Tropopause

A technique for detecting large hydrometeors at high altitudes is described here and applied to the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite/Microwave Limb Sounder (UARS/MLS) 203-GHz radiance measurements at tangent pressures between 200 and 46 hPa. At these tangent pressures the radiances remain optically thin and cloudy-sky radiances are brighter than normal clear-sky cases. Unlike infrared/visibl...

CALIPSO/CALIOP Cloud Phase Discrimination Algorithm

The current cloud thermodynamic phase discrimination by Cloud-Aerosol Lidar Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) is based on the depolarization of backscattered light measured by its lidar [CloudAerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP)]. It assumes that backscattered light from ice crystals is depolarizing, whereas water clouds, being spherical, result in minimal depolarizatio...

Variations of tropical upper tropospheric clouds with sea surface temperature and implications for radiative effects

[1] The variations of tropical upper tropospheric (UT) clouds with sea surface temperature (SST) are analyzed using effective cloud fraction from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on Aqua and ice water content (IWC) from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on Aura. The analyses are limited to UT clouds above 300 hPa. Our analyses do not suggest a negative correlation of tropical-mean UT clou...

The depolarization - attenuated backscatter relation: CALIPSO lidar measurements vs. theory.

Using measurements obtained by the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) satellite, relationships between layer-integrated depolarization ratio (delta) and layer-integrated attenuated backscatter (gamma) are established for moderately thick clouds of both ice and water. A new and simple form of the delta-gamma relation for spherical particles, developed fr...

A comparison of ice water content measurement techniques on the FAAM BAe-146 aircraft

This paper presents a comparison of ice water content (qi) data from a variety of measurement techniques on the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) BAe-146 research aircraft. Data are presented from a range of cloud types measured during the PIKNMIX field experiment that include mixed-phase stratocumulus, cumulus congestus and cirrus clouds. These measurements cover a broad ra...
